When I was a child, I used to adore my aunties’ skin. They are in their 30’s and 40’s when I was on my reckless days. They all have fair and flawless skin, maybe because of our Chinese blood. During my childhood days, I am not cautious with what I do. I just go play and be careless as I can be outside the house. I ended up getting wounds when I was a child and that drives my grandma crazy. She told me that when I get older, I will regret those times. Then, after so many years I found out that my grandma is totally correct! My skin is not as flawless as my aunties! I got scars on my legs. Good thing that I found helpful products that keep my skin healthier than before. I tried so many things and in my journey, I have proven that there are skin care myths that are not really true based on my personal experiences!

Just like you, I keep on trying and see what will work but sometimes I ended up disappointed! I want to share the top 10 skin care myths that I have found and debunked! Right now, my skin is not 100% flawless but I am loving it! Maybe, confidence is one of the ingredients you will need!

Top 10 Skin Care Myths:

#1: Sunscreen are only for summer swimming outings!

That is not totally correct!  Even on cloudy days, the radiation from the sun which is known as Ultra-violet radiation passes by the earth and reaches our skin. That is why we should apply sunscreen to have our skin protected all day long especially if you are always on the field.

#2: The higher the SPF, the better it will work!

Not this time. It is always recommended to buy sunscreen with SPF 30 to keep your skin protected from the damaging UV rays from the sun and again, wear it even on cloudy days.

#3: Drink more water to prevent dry skin!

No, water won’t prevent dry skin. As dry skin doesn’t simply mean losing moisture but it can also cause by some other things such as the weather and the genes. It is recommended to keep hydrated but it won’t prevent a dry skin.

#4: The more the expensive the products, the better!

N0t really! The price of a skin care product doesn’t really matter. What matters most is the formulation of the product, it is always better to check the label.

#5: Chocolate is bad for skin!

Not all chocolate! Dark chocolates are better options. You can consume it by bars or as drinks. It is composed of antioxidants that are great for our skin. I found this myth very satisfying! Who doesn’t love a nice bar of chocolate?!

#6: Choose the skin care product according to your age!

As you can see in the advertisements, there are many skin care products that are based on age. There are skin care products for teens, for young adults and for over 50! Actually, our skin doesn’t depend on what age we are! It is about the skin types, find which skin type you have and look for skin care products according to it.

#7: Not removing makeup at night can cause acne!

No again! Acne is not caused by makeup stains at night. What you will get without removing your makeup before going to bed is older skin which I have already discussed on my recent post that you can find here.

#8: If you have allergies, get the hypoallergenic products!

This doesn’t happen all the time! Hypoallergenic skin care products are made not for people with allergies. This only means that these products are less likely to prevent allergies. If you have allergy issues, better consult with a dermatologist!

#9: As you grow older, you will get “age spots”!

Yikes, I hate age spots! These are freckles-like brown spots on the skin. At first, I taught it is just because of genes or whatever! Lately, I found out that the sun is causing these! This is why we should always put a sunscreen protection on our skin. It doesn’t matter how old or young you are, you can get “age spots” if you will not be careful.

#10: Wounds should stay uncovered and air-dry to help with the healing!

This is one of the most important lessons I learned as I reach my teenage years. Wounds should be treated closely, apply an antibiotic ointment and keep them covered with a gauze. This is the fastest way how you will treat them, do not let them air-dry and uncovered.

I hope that you will find time to take care of your skin while you are young. Although there are many great products in the market today, we should be careful which ones are we using. It is also very important to know your skin type and work on it.
